DESCRIPTION: France, Belgian slate and multi colored marble mantel clock, the front with incised gilt and silvered ornament depicting two Phoenix eating snakes flanking a central urn, with trailing leaves, vines, and flowers, the front corners with turned slate and marble columns with gilt bronze finials and feet, the case top with Gothic inspired gilt bronze surround and slate dome, with bronze finial, black slate dial with incised gilt Arabic numerals, colored marble center, marked "W. H. Glenny & Sons & Co. Buffalo" with gilt hands, French, 8 day, time and strike, movement with square plates, c1885
CONDITION: Case very good overall, with some haze on sides and back, one small chip in colored marble, at back left, one chip in front of left column, repaired long ago, the gilt and silvered engraving bright and clean, bronze finials and feet polished to brass, now tarnished, dial very good, minute hand painted gold, movement clean, ticks and strikes, a very nice example. William H. Glenny (1818-1883), a native of Northern Ireland, established a crockery and import business in Buffalo in 1840. In the 1870's he took his sons into the expanded business as W. H. Glenny & Sons & Co. After his death in 1883 his sons ran the business until dissolved in 1898. Ht 19 1/2"
